<h3>Build an Advanced Camera App for Nokia Lumia Phones</h3>
Rajesh Lal<br/><br/>
Excerpt from the article... <a href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dn630649.aspx">http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dn630649.aspx</a>
<br/><br/>
In this article, I’m going to teach you how to develop an app for the 41-megapixel (MP) Nokia Lumia 1020 and 20MP Nokia Lumia 1520 smartphones. I’ll focus primarily on the Nokia Lumia 1020, but the information applies to all Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices with PureView technology. First, I’ll discuss PureView, the technology behind the powerful camera included in the phones, and then I’ll explain the advanced features available to access and enhance your photographs. I’ll provide an overview of the Nokia Imaging SDK (it has tons of ready-to-use graphic filters) and a walk-through of how to use it. I’ll also cover the typical workflow needed to build a camera app and show you how to create a tilt-shift photo filter to simulate shallow depth of field. Let’s get started.
<br/><br/>
Understanding the PureView Technology in a 41MP Camera Phone<br/>
PureView technology consists of advanced camera hardware and related software. Together, they allow the capturing and saving of high-quality, high-resolution images. The three main aspects of PureView technology are a high-resolution camera lens, oversampling and lossless zoom. I’ll briefly explain each one.
<br/><br/>
The core of PureView technology is a high-resolution sensor, 7,728 pixels wide and 5,368 pixels high, totaling more than 41MP. This enables the camera phone to capture big photographs, six times larger than a normal 5MP photograph.
<br/><br/>
Figure 1 compares a 41MP resolution picture with a 5MP resolution picture. Because of this 41MP resolution, you can take high-quality 34MP 16:9 photographs (7,728 x 4,354) as well as 38MP 4:3 photographs (7,152 x 5,368), as shown in the lens view of the camera in Figure 2.
<br/><br/>
A 41MP Picture Compared with a 5MP Picture
<br><br>

<br><br>
Figure 1 A 41MP Picture Compared with a 5MP Picture
<br/><br/>
Lossless Zoom Is Still Part of the Photograph
Figure 2 Lossless Zoom Is Still Part of the Photograph
<br/><br/>
Pixel oversampling is when the camera takes a 41MP photograph and creates a high-quality 5MP image. This is the picture you see on the phone’s screen. Furthermore, the oversampling process keeps all the rich detail in the image but filters away any visual noise.
<br/><br/>
The third aspect of PureView technology is lossless zoom, which simply means you don’t lose image quality when you zoom. This is possible because—at any point in time—you have available the original 41MP picture, which is oversampled to show a 5MP photo. When you zoom, you’re really zooming into a part of the original 41MP photo. At up to a 3x zoom, you’re still dealing with parts of the original 41MP photo. And even at maximum zoom, your photo quality is still the quality of a regular 5MP photo. Due to oversampling, the picture quality only gets better as you zoom. Figure 2 shows how the lossless zoom is still part of the original photograph.
<br/><br/>
The Nokia Imaging SDK
When building a camera app, a high-resolution photograph is the raw material, but you’ll need an advanced software stack that can use the huge images and let you access and manipulate them. This is where the Nokia Imaging SDK comes into the picture (bit.ly/1hJkmpl). It provides a set of advanced features to access a high-resolution photograph taken by the camera.
<br/><br/>
The Nokia Imaging SDK includes partial JPEG decoding, called Random Access JPEG (RAJPEG) technology. RAJPEG allows for random access of JPEG data, fast downscaling of images and instant partial decoding. These aspects of RAJPEG enable real-time image manipulation. The Nokia Imaging SDK contains more than 50 filters, effects and enhancements. It even contains a set of the most common image operations, such as crop, resize, rotate and undo, just to name a few. These out-of-the-box features help you create advanced camera/photo-centric applications without worrying about the most common functionalities. To use the Nokia Imaging SDK in your project, follow the instructions on the Nokia Lumia Developer Library page (bit.ly/KzDPNG).<br/><br/>

"This reference work illustrates 100 usability design tips for websites and other applications across devices, not only for aesthetics but also for functionality and ease of use. Lal, a digital product designer, addresses advanced website functions, including the creation of a shopping cart, reviews and ratings, mobile commerce, touch screen interfaces, infographics, APIs, and other current technologies. Each topic features a short instructional page with bullet-point recommendations and tips on what to include. A facing page shows real-world examples and/or case studies. Some of the text instructions refer readers to other entries with related design concepts. The content, organized into sections titled "Desktop," "Web," "Mobile," and "Miscellaneous," is well indexed. Rather than being a technical manual on how to create websites, widgets, or other applications, this volume presents best practices from an ease-of-use perspective. The examples undoubtedly will become outdated soon, but <b>they represent some of the best illustrations of contemporary usability design</b>. The rapid evolution of technology means that few books are available to compare with this one. It will be useful to those interested and/or active in web development or mobile app development.

<br><br>
<b>What is a User Interface? How did it all begin?</b><br><br>
A User Interface (UI) is the virtual point of contact between a user and a digital product. When a user interacts with a device there are five main actors: the user, the physical point of contact, the virtual point of contact, the software itself, and the hardware device where the software is running. The earliest type of interface was called Command Line Interface, where a keyboard was used to access a program in a computer using a set of commands. In this case, the keyboard is the physical point of contact, the set of commands is the virtual point of contact, the program itself is the software that reacts to the set of commands, and the computer is the hardware device as shown in Figure 1.<br><br>

<b><br /></b>
<b>Problem solvers </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Ignite alumnus Raj Lal, a Silicon Valley software engineer, said the program changed his perspective about starting a business.
"There's a lot more to it than having a great idea, making an app, selling it and getting rich," he said.<br />
<br />
"Sure, that works for some people, obviously, and it becomes a big story and everyone thinks that's the formula for success. But it's not reality for most people, not for 99 percent of the people."<br />
<br />
Lal said the program taught him the importance of teamwork and about filling a void. "You start with a problem that you're trying to solve," he said. "Basically, you find out what the customer wants, then build according to that. Don't build something, then try to find customers."<br />
<br />
<br />
Soon said she entered the program wanting business skills but not necessarily to start her own venture.
"I thought if I had ideas, someone else would eventually make the product. I'm not capable of doing that," she said. "But the course gave me encouragement and motivation."
She said the program also gave her the resources and confidence she needed to try entrepreneurship, and provided connections to like-minded people.<br />
<br />
She, Lal and Lee continue to meet with Ignite alumni at <a href="http://meetup.com/igniter" target="_blank">monthly networking event</a>.
"The program was really inspiring," said Lee, who received a master's degree in electrical engineering from Stanford. "I learned so much I can't believe it was only nine weeks. It felt like nine months."

<br />
Excerpts <br><br>
<b>How does a good User Interface translate into a great user experience?</b><br><br>
A User Interface is when a user interacts with an application. It can be used both to consume information, and to interact with the application. It can be both visual and non-visual. The role of a good User Interface (UI) is to get the information and interaction to the user first. Steve Jobs once said that good design is not how it looks, but how it works. A good UI adheres to this same principle. It has a basic purpose to help the user.
<br><br>
<b>What is the architecture of an application in terms of user interface?</b> <br><br>
We have used an Architecture view for each User Interface. The architecture, in terms of User Interface, is the key elements of the application. You’ll need to know these in order to create multiple versions of the application. Once you know the main elements, then the final application can be of any shape and size, but still function the same. It also gives a top view of the User Interface, how the application fits in the bigger picture, and interacts in the real world. For example, a checkout application is a key aspect of online commerce, but it is still only one part. The other parts of e-commerce also need to be understood in order to create a great ecommerce experience.

Getting Your First 1000 customers<br><br>
Featured Speaker: James Kennedy, Founder and "growth hacker" at Piehole.tv<br><br>
It might be easy to scale from 1000 to 5000 customers after you've at least established a user base - but how do you get your first 1000 customers - beyond family and friends - who will actually provide valuable feedback, use your product and maybe even pay...<br><br>
James will share his story as well as the specific steps describing how they found their first 1000 customers. He will outline their strategy and provide specific techniques for gaining more traction, faster.<br><br>

Digital Design Essentials<br><br>
Whether dashboard software or a single-page website, a location-aware mobile app or a 10-foot TV interface, digital design is the tip of the iceberg; the actual design is not how it looks but how it works. Dive deep into the workings of one hundred popular desktop, Web, mobile, and TV user interfaces.
Digital Design Essentials is a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary encyclopedia of user interface design. Richly illustrated and easy to navigate, it includes architectural views of the application, best practices and design guidelines, tips for creating a great user experience, along with live examples. Every major user interface concept is defined and illustrated for readers, including command line, "WIMP,” metro UI, skeuomorphic design, accessible web interface, e-commerce, zooming user interface, infographic design, adaptive interface, mobile lifestyle apps, voice interface, and intelligent user interface. <br><br>
Learn best practices, design guidelines and pointers for creating a compelling user experience.
Digital Design Essentials provides the experienced designer with an understanding of application design and user interfaces. Raj Lal points out the different components affecting the user experience and design principles applicable in an array of application interfaces, enabling the reader to understand the inner working of the application, plan key features, apply design guidelines, and choose the best practices instead of reinventing the wheel.

A professional group with a common goal to succeed as an entrepreneur, by helping each other, sharing resources, and growing together.
<br><br>
A group of entrepreneurs and investors who come together to leverage the individual strengths of each other so that the collective sum is greater than its parts. We come into this group as equals. Each person has their own ideas and interests, all of which are equally important, and each person’s feedback and contribution, is equally valued. With this comes equal amounts of commitment to each other and to the group.
<br><br>
So far we have 6 members, (first row left to right) Raj Lal, Dan, Nina, (second row left to right) Jossy, Michael, Xu. <br><br>

Wishing all my friends and family a very happy new year 2013.
What a wonderful way to start a new year with a great quote
<h3>
The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new Year but that We should have a new soul </h3>

<br><br>
Here are the excerpts.
<br><br>
Accessibility in web design is sometimes thought of as an “add on” or “extra” by designers and organizations as opposed to a necessity, and consequently only partially implemented if at all. Through his presentations on accessibility at conferences such as the HOW Interactive Design Conference and HTML5 DevConf to his involvement with the standardization process of the Web and being a contributing member of the W3C Accessibility Group accessibility champion Rajesh Lal, Senior Web Engineer at Nokia Emerging Platforms is working to change that.
<br><br>
In our interview with Lal, he responds to some of the key questions regarding what accessibility is, why it’s important and how designers can educate/persuade clients of its value socially as well as to the bottom line.
<br><br>
<img src="http://www.graphicdesign.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/accessibledesign_slide4.jpg" width="500"> <br>
<br><br>
<b>1. For readers that may be unfamiliar with accessibility and/or its importance can you talk a bit about why it’s important and how it ties in with usability and design?</b>
<br><br>
Accessibility is a term that has come to digital design from the real world, where it implies a number of physical and mental handicaps and is represented by a wheelchair icon. There are four major categories of disability: blind and visual impairment, deaf and hard of hearing, mobility, and cognitive learning problems. The solutions are accessible parking slots, multiple elevator buttons, and accessible entrances and exits. In the digital world, it means a lot more than that. Not only does it include these people with disabilities, but also parents and senior folks who are not such tech savvy users, temporary conditions, or even limited technology like old browsers or computers, which require accessible solutions. Making an accessible design is about keeping everyone in mind and going forward together.
<br><br>
In the digital world, accessibility means making things easy for everyone to use. It’s very important because nowadays, the success of a product depends on user adoption in multiple devices, and an accessible solution that accommodates all types of users and devices. On the surface, it looks similar to usability and good design principles, but there is a subtle difference. Accessibility accommodates everyone. In the design world, you have the freedom to design per your audience. An artistic analog clock may not have numbers/indicators. Ambiguity can be part of the great design, but an accessible artistic clock will have clear distinctions between numbers and will show the time precisely. Accessibility does not have any place for ambiguity. In the digital world where your target audience is everyone, accessibility is always a precursor for good design.
<br><br>
<b>2. Do you have any suggestions for how designers can balance pushing creative boundaries with creating an accessible design?</b>
<br><br>
Graphic designers can argue that accessible designs limit the choices you can make for an accessible design, and I think that’s a valid point to some extent. Accessible design does recommend a certain amount of contrast between foreground and background, it asks you to use creative typography sparingly, and to use san serif font types for most of the content. But the core idea of accessibility is clarity in conveying your message.
<br><br>
If you understand this fact, then accessible solution is actually helping you by giving you clear guidelines on what is more clear and easily understandable by most people. A simple example is logo design. Companies seek a logo that can also print well in black and white so that even shades of grey will look great, but most of the popular logos have clear contrasting colors. So, if you want more people to appreciate your design, concentrate on clarity first and go for an accessible solution.
<br><br>
<b>3. Do you have any suggestions for how designers can educate clients about the importance of incorporating accessibility into their projects?</b>
<br><br>
There are three main business reasons: senior folks are among the main beneficiaries of an accessible solution. The population of seniors in the United States exceeds 100 million, and the have spending power of around two trillion dollars. The second reason is section 508, a U.S. law that requires all government entities to not discriminate between users. The third important reason, which mainly benefits web design, is search engine optimization. If your website is accessible it is much more search friendly and so will get more search engine traffic than others.
<br><br>
<b>4. Are there any live sites that you consider good examples of “dos” and/or “don’ts”?</b>
<br><br>
For Web related design, W3C (World Wide Web Consortium, an organization responsible for developing standards for the Web) has a comprehensive set of guidelines for making your website accessible. Also check out my article, Accessible Design with HTML5 at MSDN magazine.
<br><br>
<b>5. Anything else you would like to add?</b>
<br><br>
I do want to add that accessible design is not only our social responsibility but is also something we are doing for ourselves. In 20 years, we might need some of these accessible solutions. Do you want to design something that you yourself might not be able to use properly in future?

Here is the brief on the article
<br><br>
<h2>Designing Accessibility with HTML5</h2>
<br><br>
If you’re truly interested in reaching a broad audience, you’ll want to design your Web site for accessibility. Accessibility is about making Web pages easier to access, easier to use and available to everyone. In general, using the latest technologies makes accessibility easier to accomplish. Today, that means using HTML5.
<br><br>
To be accessible, your content needs to be available on a broad range of devices, such as ordinary computers using a keyboard or mouse, screen readers, audio browsers, devices with limited bandwidth, old browsers and computers, and mobile phones and touch devices. Moreover, it should be reachable by the widest variety of people, including those with disabilities and senior citizens, as well as people with low literacy levels or temporary illness, or who prefer using only a keyboard or mouse.
<br><br>
<ul>The four key areas disability accessibility seeks to address are:
<li>Hearing</li>
<li>Mobility</li>
<li>Cognitive</li>
<li>Visual</li>
</ul>

Super exciting journey begins January 13th. Stanford Ignite is a program on Innovation and Entrepreneurship for aspiring Entrepreneurs.
<br><br>
When I first heard about this program, an year ago, I immediately knew that I am going to do this. Stanford's best of the best teachers come together for a 3 month part-time program, once a year. For a bay area professional, it just cannot get any better than this. I waited around 8 months to apply for the program. But In their information seminar when I saw 1000 people in the Auditorium, and knowing that there batch is of ~65 people, in which they will select around 30 from Stanford and 30 from outside, I did not believed I had a chance. Nonetheless I have been preparing for it all of this year. And preparation never fails you.
<br><br>
Then I met Yossi Feinberg, Director of the program a few weeks ago in the group interview. I felt a unique connection, an inexplicable feeling, that I knew him from events from future. I somehow knew I will get into ignite, it just felt right. There is an old saying, that the teacher cannot teach a student until the student is ready. I felt as if I am ready for this. I just knew that my destiny is entwined with his in things much bigger than both of us in future.
